400 lipsticks found to contain lead, FDA says

ReflectionAfter reading this article, it made me really glad that I am a male. This article really only affects females and quite frankly, I am worried for them. Just the thought that cosmetics that they use contain lead in them makes me want to throw away all of the make up that they own. I was saddened when reading this article because nowadays, all the women that I know use all different kinds of cosmetics to enhance their looks. Not only are they covering the natural beauty but now they are covering their faces with trace amounts of lead and that is very worrisome to me. Another part of the article that surprised me was the fact that even candy contains a trace amount of lead. This was the only part of the article that really related to me considering that i love to eat candy but after finding out that some candy can contain lead is very disheartening. The next step that can be taken when looking at the different affected cosmetics is to really make this top priority when regarding the ban of the high amounts of lead within the select lipsticks that have them. The government has already managed to regulate most cosmetic problems except two but i think they should work on those too. When reading that it was because of color additives that contained lead and the fact that they were mineral based, maybe there is a possibility that we can create an area of land that is lead free and can be safe to use in these specific cosmetics.

SummaryA recent analysis of lipstick showed that 400 shades contained trace amounts of lead. This is extremely dangerous considering lead is highly poisonous to our body. Many of these lipsticks are by highly advertised brands. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics have been pleading for the government to set limits in the levels of lead within lipstick. They experienced resistance from the FDA, saying that the amount of lead within the lipstick does not have any safety risks. It was then later discovered that this statement does not have any scientific basis and caused the government to get involved. People have started to compare the amounts of lead in lipstick to the amount in candy but that too was hard to back up considering we intentionally eat candy, not lipstick. Because of this, the Personal Care Products Council had petitioned the agency to limit the amount of lead that is being put into cosmetics. Lead is not intentionally put into lipstick however. The color additives are mineral based and contain traces of lead found in soil water and air. After the regulation of the lead, only 2 exceeded the okay amount of lead in cosmetics.
